Cultura y noticias hispanas del Valle del Hudson
November is here, and it is a good time to thank you for continuing to support La Voz month after month. What began 22 years ago as an eight-page, black-and-white quarterly publication has grown into a free, full-color monthly magazine with twenty pages, distributed across ten counties in our region.
From Rockland to Albany, thanks to our partners in the local library systems throughout the Hudson Valley and the Catskills, you can always find copies of La Voz at your nearest library. We also distribute the magazine through Latino-owned stores, churches, community and health centers, laundromats, and Hispanic restaurants in towns and cities with growing Spanish-speaking populations in the counties of Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rensselaer, Sullivan, and Ulster. Thank you to all the businesses and organizations that keep a copy of La Voz behind their doors, on their entryway tables, or on a bookshelf. I invite you to take a picture of where you found La Voz and tag us on social media @lavozhudsonvalley.
And, of course, thank you to you, the tens of thousands of Spanish-speaking readers who follow us on social media, subscribe to our electronic newsletter (sign up here: mailchi.mp/bard/suscribete-a-la-voz), visit our website, or subscribe to the print edition of the magazine. Thank you also to those who tune in to La Voz en Breve on community radio stations, and special thanks to Radio Kingston en Español for giving my show, La Voz con Mariel Fiori, a home.
Thank you to all our contributors, including Professor Camilo Rojas, who this year, through his column Our Artists (Nuestros Artistas), has introduced us to Jorge Sánchez, Annecy Báez, Alessandra González, Paloma Herrera, María Lago, Ernesto Pedroso, Camilo Sebastián Rojas-Lavado, María Fernanda Hubeaut Rozek, Steven González, and Melanie González. Are you an artist, or do you know a Latine artist who should be featured in La Voz? Send us an email at [email protected].
Thank you to holistic psychologist Dora Inés Grosso García, whose column The Power of Love (El poder de amor) has encouraged us to think about self-actualization, how our environment influences our behavior, family constellations and healing intergenerational wounds, abundance, and tools for managing anger, among many other topics.
Thanks to the many Bard College students (Bard is the home of La Voz) and other contributors to this magazine, we have been able to bring you a variety of articles on current events, including support for immigrant families in Kingston schools; what is happening with proposals for new ICE detention centers in the community; consular assistance; the support networks of SALT and the Community Resource House; health care as a human right; new protections for immigrants in New York; opportunities for Latina women’s health in the Hudson Valley; what AMI is and how it is used to measure affordability; English classes for adults and music classes for children; and laws concerning electric bicycles and Flock cameras in Newburgh, among many others.
In our sections, we cover topics related to the environment, such as “the juice of garbage” and feeding the earth so that the earth can feed us, as well as healthy living and resources. In addition, through our American Dream section, we have introduced you to Pastors Gilberto and Cecilia Ruiz, Father Arturo Rojas, Angélica Farfan, sisters Gloria and Elba Uyaguari, Isaiah Rosado, Pedro C, Mason Hernández, and María Arias. Would you like us to tell your story in La Voz’s American Dream section? Send us an email at [email protected].
Thank you to everyone who attended the events La Voz invited you to this year, from classical music concerts at the Fisher Center to a baseball game with Los Fenómenos Enmascarados and the premiere of the play Six Episodes in Search of a Patriarch. We had such a great time! This month, we have more musical invitations for you, and every month you can find recommendations in our Good Taste section and our Resource Guide, featuring all kinds of activities, most of them free.
Speaking of “free,” the magazine you are holding in your hands is not for sale: it is free to read, but it is not free to produce. Thank you to Bard College, the NoVo Foundation, and all the sponsors who support this Spanish-language media outlet. We are a small team, but with your help, we are powerful. If you have not yet made your contribution to help La Voz continue in 2027, I invite you to make a tax-deductible donation right now using this link: lavoz.bard.edu/donar.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
