Cultura y noticias hispanas del Valle del Hudson
As you know, on Sunday July 24th we had a fantastic party to celebrate 12 years of La Voz, and on the way, to fundraise so as to continue pursuing this magazine’s mission of informing the Spanish speaking communities of the Hudson Valley. It was a hot day, weatherwise, as well as from the comforting warmth from all the individuals and organizations that have supported this magazine so that this event became the grand success it was.
So without further ado, I hereby publicly and firstly thank each and every one of the members of the Soñando band, who made us dance for hours, beginning with the vocalist Ruben Quintero, followed bt Antonio Velez, Enresto Colon, Harry Justiniano, Larry Moses, Luis Perez, Pito Castillo y Samuel Dandiades. How they made us sweat, laugh and enjoy to the Caribbean rhythms! Many thanks to Maia Martinez and David Salvatierra, from DOJO Dance Company (and happy parents of a beautiful baby girl, Catalina) who came to teach us a mini class of salsa, at first, and then a demonstration of a round of salsa in between acts. The round of salsa generated many positive commentaries, specially in social media, which included a video. Thank you also to DJ El Juez, Santiago Sanchez for the good music and presentations.
The menu of the evening at the Spiegeltent (Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudoson, NY) inlcuded Uruguayan choripanes, that is to say, homemamde grilling sausage in a sandwhich bread with lettuce, tomato and the unmissable chimichurri; and Mexican corn (grilled corn served with the typical dressings), in charge of a chef delux: Gaston Robaina. Hughe thanks to him; who came dressed in his Southamerican gaucho outfit and marveled our pallates. Thanks as well to his kitchen assistant, Beatriz Arue. Apart from all these Latinamerican delicacies, we had a selection of chicken wings and their respective sauces, courtesy of don Eloy Gutierrez and Alberto Carmine Annunziata and Christine Annunziata, owners of the Italian restaurant Umberto’s in Poughkeepsie. Many thanks Umberto’s and don Eloy! Also thanks to Wilfredo Morel. I can’t forget another friend and collaborator, Laura Labastida. There was food for all tastes!
Because this event was not all about food and dance, and because our cultures are also beautifly reflected in art, we held a silent Latinamerican art auction to benefit La Voz and the participating artists, organized in collaboration with Pritzker Studio & Gallery. Innumerable thanks to this year’s participating artists: Mernie Baker, Rosa Maria Baran, Shash Broxson, Sasha Bush, Maria Cristina Brusca, Nelson Conde, Mercedes Cecilia, Regina de Costa Val, Elena Davicino, Ana Laura González, Franc Palaia, Elisa Pritzker, Maria Scrudato and Pablo Shine. Also, thanks to Jose Villa from Casa Villa restaurant in Kingston for his donation for the auction.
Of course, our sponsors helped make our anniversary an event to remember and anxiously wait for next year’s. We thank our main sponsors Dutchess Community College and the Alzheimer’s Association of the Hudson Valley. Also, many thanks to our sponsors ABC Latino, MVP Health Care, W.A. Sierra Insurance Agency and Erie Insurance. Dr. Pamela Edington, president of DCC, Dr. Enrique Rob Lunski, president of GET/ABC Latino, and Juan Pablo Ramírez, from MVP Health Care, where all present and took to the opportunity to talk to the audience between performances. Thank you for your beautiful words and for your constant work in improving our community from your respective areas!
To all the personnel at the Spiegeltent, photographer Jodiah Jacobs and the helpers at La Voz for this event: Julieth Nunez, Madeline Calhoun and Isabel Vazquez, thank you so much! Thanks also go to my friend and colleague Antonio Flores-Lobos, and the artist and graphic designer Pilar Roca, for all her support throughout the years. Thanks to my love Japheth Wood, for taking care of our family.
A million thanks and a million more to all the collaborators and readers of La Voz each month, and each year, for trusting and beleiving in this independent and non-profit medium of communication based at Bard College, which endevors to inform and do its part for those who still hold faith in achieving our very own American dream.
For twelve more years! (At least)
Looking forward to seeing you at our 2017 celebration!
