American studies, as some have observed, is not defined by what
it chooses to include, but by what it refuses to exclude—which is almost
everything. This course introduces students to the capacious multidisciplinary
field of American studies. An inter-discipline that, at its birth in the
mid-twentieth century, united literary and historical studies at its core in an
attempt to define what, if anything, constituted “American civilization,”
American studies now is in close dialogue with ethnic studies, environmental
and urban studies, Native American and indigenous studies, queer studies,
disability studies, critical geography, sociology, media studies, art history,
and more, while strengthening its links to questions of politics and social
justice. Scholars in American studies read and interpret a broad range of artifacts
(essays, literary texts, photographs, film, music, architecture, visual art,
historical documents, and legal texts) in order to think critically about
“America” and who and what makes it—in a hemispheric, transnational, and global
sense. In this course, “The Discovery of What it Means to Be an American”
describes both a piercing 1961 James Baldwin essay as well as it does our
process of tracing lines of connection across historical moments and media in
order to understand the aftereffects of enslavement, genocide, colonization,
war, and migration as they have shaped U.S. history and culture. Issues of
race, gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic difference will be discussed at
length. This course is open both to intended American Studies majors and to others
interested in developing skills in close-reading and critical analysis.

Cookouts are paramount in the Black American community. The cookout
has always been an event that allows “folx” to celebrate culture, fellowship
with new and old faces, sing, dance, play games and generally preserve the
legacy of ancestors. The practice also has had lasting economic impact for
entrepreneurs in the Black community. What is notable however is that the root
of the cookout—the barbecuing itself—largely came Native American community’s
practices of pit cooking, and in some part through the complex relationship
between African Americans and Native Americans. This class will be centered
around the book Black Smoke: African Americans and the United States of
Barbecue— among other important texts, video, audio and film—to explore the
main elements that have aided in shaping this pivotal form of placemaking among
Black people. Goals of the course are: To critically examine the “human” design
of placemaking and the important elements of fellowship; To explore the complex
relationship between Black peoples and Native American tribes that brought
about the art of barbecuing as a cultural trapping; To unpack and understand
the economic implications of barbecue in the Black community; To share and
learn about Black cookout cultural norms, and practices; To share and learn
about fellow students’ community practices, and; To utilize campus resources,
insights from Native American community members, and other wider Hudson Valley
community resources. Along the way, students in the course will work on the
design and construction of a custom barbeque pit—likened after traditional
Native American design— to create a lasting “place” and cultural practice on
campus. The course will culminate in students throwing a cookout in the spirit
of the Black community that in turn pays homage to the rich history of
indigenous and Black peoples. This course has no prerequisites and is open to
students at all levels.
