First Year Seminar
GROUP I
The following sections
will examine a series of moments in Western history instrumental
in the development of our current conceptions of education. These
moments will include the creation of the Platonic Academy in classical
Greece, the invention of the university in medieval France, and
the transformation of the medieval university along classical
lines in nineteenth-century Germany and America. The effect of
intellectual movements such as scholasticism, humanism, and Romanticism
upon these moments in Western history will constitute a central
aspect of our inquiry. At the same time as we plot the development
of Western ideas of education, however, we will also consider
the critiques of these ideas offered from both inside and outside
the institutions with which these ideas were affiliated. Why did
monks resist the advent of the university in the Middle Ages?
How does the "Bildingsroman" or novel of formation,
like those which Goethe and George Eliot composed, relate to philosophical
writings on education, like those which Rousseau and Nietzsche
drafted? How have women, such as the medieval Heloise and the
modern Virginia Woolf, and members of minority groups, such as
W.E.B. Du Bois, responded to institutions of education from which
they have so often been excluded? If the value of education, and
particularly education in a certain "Western tradition,"
still remains hotly debated today, it may be because debates about
education lie at the very heart of that Western tradition.
