WebDAV is a method of connecting to an online server without going through the traditional FTP process. It employs drag-and-drop functionality and thus can be quicker and more convenient than FTP, and with WebDAV you can delete, rename, and reorganize files in this folder just as you would on your own computer.

This tutorial is designed to show you how to connect to your online courses through WebDAV, modify existing documents, and upload and delete files on your webspace. The first section should be followed by any new user on any platform, while the following sections are operating-system specific.
(1) Login to WebCT.
(2) Once you have logged in, you will see a black bar running partially across the top of the screen. Click the second link to the left in the black area, a line of text that says "WebDAV info."
(3) A list of the courses that you are currently maintaining will appear on the page. Out of the selection, find the course that you intend to modify. Below each course are two lines of text with a web address printed in blue; you will want to highlight the blue link next to the black text that reads "Course Files."

Example:

Once you have highlighted the text, copy it. (For a PC, press the "control" and "c" keys together and for a Mac, press the "command" and "c" keys together.)

(1) Go to the Desktop and Double-Click the "My Computer" icon.
(2) Double-Click the "Web Folders" icon.
(3) Double-Click the "Add Web Folder" icon.
(4) Paste your course's WebDAV address (which you obtained and copied in the earlier section) into the text field by pressing the "control" and "v" keys. Once you've done this, click "Next."
(5) If you want, you can change the name of the folder as it will appear on your computer for easier reference. Renaming the folder won't cause any technical problems, so you're free to choose any name you want. Click "Finish" once you've configured the name.
(6) A connection to your online files will be created in the Web Folders area under "My Computer." Double-click it to access your course's online data.
(7) When you open this shortcut, you'll see all the files and directories that already exist for this course on the online server. You can create a new directory by creating a new folder (right click, select "New," then select "Folder") and can make changes to the preexisting files by opening them and then making your editions. When you do this, you'll be asked for your login and password again, and since the server must be accessed whenever you create or edit a file, there will be a slight delay as the computers communicate.

To upload a file to your WebCT course, you can copy it from its location on your computer and paste it into the desired location in your web directory, once again using the combinations of "Ctrl+C" and "Ctrl+V". A more versatile way of uploading is to use dragging and dropping, by which you left-click and icon, "drag" it from its folder on your computer by keeping the left mouse held down, and "drop" it onto your WebDAV directory. Using the same method, you can also download files by dragging icons from your WebCT directory and dropping them into folders on your PC.

To delete an item, highlighting its icon and press the delete key; however, since you're editing files stored on the internet, there's no "Trash" or "Recycling Bin," and all deletions are final.
(8) Once you've finished editing your WebCT files and if you're using a public computer, you'll probably want to prevent any other users from accessing your files through WebDAV. If this is the case, double-click the "Web Folers" icon in the "My Computer" area, highlight the WebDAV shortcut you created for this session, and press delete.

(1) Download and install the WebDAV application Goliath. If you want, you can also check out the developer's site for further information.
(2) Run the application. Enter your address, username, and password and click OK.
(3) A folder will appear that lists all the files that are currently stored in your WebCT course's webspace. You can upload files to it by dragging a file from another folder and dropping it into the location you want it to be stored.
(4) When you are done, just quit the program. Unlike on the other platforms, you won't need to worry about removing a shortcut that would allow other users access to your files.

(1) Go to the desktop and press the "command" and "k" keys.
(2) Enter your address, username, and password and click OK.
(3) A folder will appear on your desktop that, when opened, will display all the files currently stored on your course's space. You can upload files to it by dragging a file from another folder and dropping it into the location you want it to be stored.
(4) If you're using a public computer and want to prevent any other users from accessing your files, drag the icon of your folder onto the trashcan. If you're using your own computer, you might want to keep this shortcut on your desktop for easy access in the future.
