LECTURE
Werner Hegemann and the Search for Universal Urbanism
Thursday, May 5, 2005

Werner Hegemann’s wide ranging interests and complex, often ambiguous points of view resembled the modern city to which he devoted his lifelong attention. His reputation as an adversary of modern architecture was anchored in his belief in the primacy of urban planning over the built environment. While he was not a practicing architect or planner, he was an observant and harsh critic of the modern canon that emphasized form over functionality and social commitment. His convictions were framed by the cultural and political environment of his time and his intercontinental travels, yet they are of notable contemporary relevance for architects, urbanists, and perceptive citizens. Architectural historian Christiane Crasemann Collins, will present research from the first full study on this little-known and influential figure of the 20th century.
