ResNet FAQs

Answers to the Most Common ResNet Questions...

Which Residence Halls have ResNet?
ALL residence hall on campus have ResNET (internet access in each room).

What kind of computers can connect to ResNet?

Macintosh or PC compatible computers that meet the minimum hardware and software requirements can connect to ResNet.

Will I need a modem?

ResNet connections do not use the telephone lines in student rooms, and so do not require a modem. All student computers using ResNet are required to have ethernet networking capabilities. For more information see the computer requirements. Students whose computers are not on ResNet may choose to use a modem connected to their dorm room telephone jack to access the campus network, but modem access provides only low-speed access to Bard's computing resources and ties up the student's phone line when in use.

What if I don't have a computer?

Many Bard College students do not have a computer, and get along just fine. There are public computer rooms with both PCs and Macs. For a list of all computer labs, hours, software, and equipment, see HCRC Labs. While having a computer in one's own dorm room is certainly handy, it is not essential.

Can I purchase a computer through Bard College?

No. Although we recommend certain makes and models of computers for student use, Bard does not act as a computer retail outlet.

Can I purchase network hardware through Bard College?

Yes. Ethernet adapters will be available for purchase and on-site installation in student computers during specified times. Please watch campus announcements for details. Bard will supply network connecting cables free of charge.

What do I need to connect to the Bard ResNet?

In order to connect to the Bard ResNet, students must supply a working computer that meets the minimum requirements and an installed Ethernet network interface. Bard will supply all necessary networking software free of charge.
