About ResLife

On-Campus Housing

Bard's more than 40 residence halls vary considerably in architectural style, social style, and size. For example, Ward Manor is a 19th-century mansion; Gahagan is a small, cozy house; and the new Village Dormitories offer suite-style living arrangements. Most of the residence halls are coed, and almost half of the rooms are for single occupancy. All residence halls are equipped with extension phones, and the larger buildings have social rooms, kitchens, and laundries.

Room Assignment for New Students  Rooms for all new students are assigned by the director of residence life. All first-year students are assigned roommates.

Room Draw  Students who decide to live on campus during their next year select their rooms by lottery, according to class seniority, in early May.

Summer and Other Vacations  Many of the residence halls are used for conferences and workshops when classes are not in session. Others are designated as student on-campus housing during the summer and January intersession. Students who wish to live on campus at these times must obtain permission from the Office of Residence Life. The College does not provide storage space over the summer vacation.

Board  Students living in the residence halls are required to be on the meal plan. The food service caters to vegans, vegetarians, and nonvegetarians.

Married Students There is no on-campus housing for married students.

Graduate Students  There are a number of units (rooms, bathroom) available on campus for rental by graduate students.

Off-Campus Housing

First-year students are required to live on campus unless they are over 21 years old, married, or veterans, or have a permanent residence within 50 miles of the Bard campus. All unmoderated students who wish to live off campus must have a completed and approved Off-Campus Living Request for Unmoderated Student Form on file. Moderated students who wish to live off campus must indicate this by signing the declaration on the front of their Financial Clearance Card and returning it to the Student Accounts office. Resident students are not allowed to move off campus at midyear. The Office of Residence Life keeps a listing of accommodations in the surrounding area. Students receiving financial aid are advised to find out how moving off campus may affect their financial aid package.
