La Voz is a free monthly magazine written in Spanish by
Bard College students and faculty, as well as by individuals and
organizations from outside the Bard community. La Voz, with a circulation
of 4,000 copies and an estimated readership of 12,000, is a service
for the Hispanic community of the Mid-Hudson Valley area.
Sponsored by Bard College, La Voz brings news, literature
and culture topics, and also is an important tool that empowers
the Latino population about legal rights awareness, health care,
and the English language.
La Voz is the bridge that connects Anglo and Hispanic cultures
in the Hudson Valley, aiming to serve as an open forum for the community.
Our blog shares the same spirit, http://lavozdelhudson.blogspot.com/.
Hope you enjoy it!

abierto para la comunidad. Nuestro blog también tiene ese
espíritu, http://lavozdelhudson.blogspot.com/. ¡Esperamos

La Voz received a 2007 Ippies Award from the Independent
Press Association.

Mayor's Office of Immigrant's Affairs and Juana Ponce de Léon,
Executive Director, Independent
Press Association
The Ippies Awards are the only journalism awards on the East Coast
that honor excellence in ethnic and community press in New York
State, whether reported in English or in other languages.
The Ippies Awards honor five editorial categories (Investigative
News; Editorial and Commentary; Feature; Immigrant, Social
Justice and Racial Issues; and Labor Issues) and three graphic
design categories (Photograph; Photo Essay; and Overall Graphic
Design).
La Voz's award is an Honorable Mention in the Best Overall
Design category "for making black and white images vivid in
the pages." The jurors were prestigious journalists
and visual artists from New York City (C.B. Cooke, Sewell
Chan, Prof. Linda Prout, Prof. Joshua Friedman and Tobias Wong),
who selected the winners based on the editorial or graphic content
independent of their circulation. Most of the media competing
with La Voz were based in New York City, and most, unlike La Voz,
are for-profit enterprises with more access to resources than
our magazine.
So the fact that La Voz competed at the same level as well-known
publications such as City Limits, El Diario La Prensa, The
Indypendent, The Forward, and others, is great news for La Voz and
all its contributors.
