network
Academic computing at Bard College has experienced rapid growth since its origins in the mid 1980s, with a current inventory of more than 500 computers distributed throughout the campus. These machines and related information technology services are managed from the Henderson Computer Resources Center (HCRC) and the Henderson Technology Laboratories, the campus's central computing facilities.
the campus network
The HCRC building houses approximately 90 computers of different types and capabilities, including Macintosh and Windows-based PCs; specialized multimedia workstations; IBM RS/6000, Sun, and Linux workstations; and X-station equipment, in addition to an extensive software library. The Henderson Technology Laboratories building features a large, mixed Macintosh and Windows-based PC public computing lab, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and a PC-based computer classroom and video conference facility.
The Bard network features a Gigabit backbone with 100MB desktop speeds that link College facilities and give students, faculty, and staff access to Internet services, e-mail, and the World Wide Web from classrooms, residence hall rooms, offices, and public areas. Bard provides high-speed ethernet access to the Internet and campus computing resources via fiber-optic cabling to all student residence halls and 802.11b(g) wireless networking in several areas around the campus including the Stevenson Library, Henderson Technology Lab, Ottaway Gatehouse, Fisher Studio Arts Building, Hegeman Hall, Albee Hall, Rose Hall, Bertelsmann Campus Center, the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, and Ward Manor Cafe; also: Tewksbury Hall, Robbins, Bartlett, Sawkill, Keen Basement, Sycamore, Spruce, Maple, and Mulberry (residence halls). Students wishing to use wireless networking will need to purchase compatible wireless network interface.
The HCRC operates a help desk and tech support service in the Henderson Technology Laboratories building. It also offers training sessions, open to all students, staff, and faculty, on productivity applications; the Internet/Web; 2D and 3D graphics; and video, audio, and multimedia applications and development.
ResNet (Bard's residential network)
Bard computing resources are available to students at many locations on the Annandale campus including the Bertelsmann Campus Center, the Stevenson Library and several public computing labs including the Henderson Technology Laboratories facility which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, students with their own personal computers can attach them to the Bard ResNet (Residential Network) in order to gain access to both internet and campus-based resources from their dorm rooms.
The Bard ResNet is a campus-wide segment of the College computer network that provides high-speed connectivity from each student's dorm room to electronic resources both on-campus and world-wide. These resources include the our gateway to campus and "World Wide Web" information resources, the Stevenson Library on-line catalog, campus and Internet e-mail, campus and Internet news groups, bulletin boards and instructional software.

network requirements
If you would like to take advantage of networking services, you'll need to be aware that the Bard staff will NOT install networking hardware or modems. The following are the minimum configurations that will be supported.
If you will be using a computer in your room, and would like to connect to the internet through Bard's network, you will need to purchase and install an ethernet interface in order to do so. All of the computers recommended below have such devices included.
Macintosh
Power Macintosh; Macintosh System 9.2; 500MB hard drive; 64MB RAM; CD-ROM; Ethernet network capabilities*; Ethernet network capabilities; Microsoft Word or Microsoft Office.
PC
Desktop: Pentium 3.1GHZ; 20GB hard drive; 256MB RAM; CD-ROM; Ethernet network capabilities*; Windows 95/98
*For those wishing to purchase this capability for an existing system, we recommend the following network adapters:
- MAC: All newer Macs are sold with built-in ethernet. If you have an older Mac, you will need to check with a local dealer to find out which 3COM card to purchase.
- PC: 3COM 10/100 ethernet card
In addition to the required hardware, Windows 200, or Mac OS 9.2 (or higher) MUST be installed.
