Survival Guide

Human Resources

Go to Human Resources (if you have not done so electronically before arrival), where you can fill out your tax forms and get your name put into the Bard College computer system.

I.D. Card

You will need to have a Bard identification card during your stay at Bard College. The card will enable you to visit the gym and borrow books from the library. You can go to the Central Services Office (after you’ve gone to Human Resources) and ask for an ID card. This ID card allows you to spend an additional $ 150.00/per semester on purchased items and can be used in the Green Onion Grocery, Down the Road Café, or Manor Café). Do spend it all because you will not receive a cash refund for dollars saved.

Meals

You are on the Bard College meal plan. Your meals will take place at Kline Commons. You will give your name or show your ID to the attendant at the door and mention that you are a Foreign Language Exchange Tutor.

Health Service

The Health and Counseling Office is at Robbins Annex (x7433), open M-F 9-5.

Library

Instead of an additional card, a bar code will be placed on your Bard ID card. You can get it either at the circulation desk, circulation office, or reference desk of the Stevenson Library.

E-Mail

To set up your electronic mail account and other computer questions, contact Paul at the Help Desk (x7500; Bogausch@bard.edu). Say that you are working at the College as a Tutor with the Foreign Language Faculty and need to set up an e-mail account. Your e-mail account will be valid usually for at least another 3 months after you leave. Before it will be closed you will receive e-mail warnings as to when it will be closed down

Mail and Mailbox

To get your mail and a mailbox you will need to go to the Post Office, which is located in the Bertelsmann Campus Center. Outgoing mail can be brought to the Post Office.

Telephone Service

To activate your telephone, see the Welcome Memo instructions.

To set up a bank account at a local bank, we recommend that you visit either of the banks listed below. Both are in the nearby town of Red Hook and can be reached by Bard shuttle or the LOOP bus. We advise you to set up a Savings Account. Be sure to take your passport and immigration documents. You will be asked for a Social Security number; tell the bank officers that you expect to receive a Social Security number in the first week of September. Please note that banks are closed on Saturday.
