Getting Around

Bikes

Bard is a very rural and beautiful campus you may want to experience by bike. Check in with Ken Cooper (cooper@bard.edu ; 845 758 7461), the Director of Safety and Security, who sometimes has a bunch of ‘left-over-bikes' to give away. At the end of your stay, please return all bikes to Ken for the next group to come in.

Bard Shuttles

Members of the Bard Community usually get around in various ways: The College itself provides shuttles (small vans or buses) to near towns and malls. Visit the Bard Transportation website to find the updated version of the day and night schedules of the Bard shuttles.

Public Buses

Public transportation can be found at this web page with a link to the Dutchess County Loop Bus Schedule from there, click on Schedules and Maps, left click on go to LOOP BUS which, among other things lists the so called Express A between Poughkeepsie and Tivoli which also stops at Bard.

Bard Vehicles (small vans)

Bard College does provide limited access to Bard-owned vehicles, on the condition that potential drivers of these cars

  1. Complete a Defensive Driver's Class (to find out about these classes,please contact Paul Marienthal (marienth@bard.edu ; 845 758 7056)
  2. Sign up for a Bard Vehicle in a timely fashion with Ed Schmidt
  3. Provide proof of ownership of driver's license and completion of the Defensive Driver's Class
  4. Can provide Bard's office of transportation with exact dates and destinations as to where they would be taking the vehicle
  5. Please note that availability of these vehicles is always subject to change and can never be guaranteed

Own your Own Car

In order to be more independent and able to enjoy the many things the Hudson Valley has to offer, some members of former FLET groups did decide to buy themselves a used car to get around - with usually one FLET taking on the responsibility of buying and insuring the car (this is usually done at the …. Insurance company in Red Hook) while interested other members ‘pitched in' and shared the financial burden (A used car usually costs between $ 800 and $ 1500; insurance depends on your age, # of drivers that would want to be on the insurance as well etc.). Bard mechanics will be able to help you with questions concerning technical or mechanical matters of used cars.

What would you need to do? You would contact the nearest DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles in Kingston, Ulster County, 240 Fair Street, Kingston, NY 12401, 845-340-3700) an inquire about a NW Driver's License. You most likely will have to present your international driver's license , and sign up for the written test you have to take to get a NY driver's license. To insure your car you would contact an insurance company in Red Hook, such as June Visconti, 12 E. Market Street, Red Hook, NY 12571-1411 (845-758-9800). Once you have worked out your insurance policy (with driver's license, model, make and purchase price of your car at hand), the Insurance Company will hand you an Insurance Card with which you will go back to the DMV to collect the license plates and paperwork for your car.
