Alcohol Information Campaign

Purpose

The Alcohol Information Campaign consists of staff, faculty and students, which meet to discuss issues related to the use and abuse of alcohol on our campus, national data and drinking trends, affects of both consumption and administrative policies, social norms, educational strategies, and the overall impact alcohol has on the academic and social life at Bard.

Mission

Consisting of administrators, staff and students, The Alcohol Information Campaign works to help students navigate their way through college without the negative ramifications of problem drinking. We offer public support to students who choose not to drink while increasing the safety and responsibility of those students who choose to drink. Our goal is to create a campus culture where the topic is more openly discussed, where education and information is provided on a regular basis to support students' decisions around alcohol, and help anyone who is really struggling with problem drinking.

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) at Bard

In addition to all kinds of weekly campus meetings, Bard is home to two AA support group meetings. Each week members of the Rhinebeck group of Alcoholics Anonymous have established the "Bard Sunday Morning Serenity" meeting of AA. This is an open meeting for anyone wishing to learn more about the fellowship. This group meets every Sunday in the Campus Center Red Room (202) from 9:30am to 10:30am. All are welcome to attend.

In addition to the Rhinebeck AA group, there is a weekly, student-run AA meeting that caters more specifically to the Bard student. Like the Sunday group, this meeting is also held in the Campus Center Red Room, and currently takes place Friday evenings at 10:30 pm during the academic year.

If you have any questions about alcohol or drug related issues, these groups are willing to provide non-judgmental information and advice. Additionally, Jeff Garrett at the counseling center, located in Robbins Annex, is an alcohol and drug specialist and is available to provide any assistance you or a friend may need.

Other Campus Resources

If you have concerns or questions about alcohol or drug use for yourself or a friend, there are several resources available to you right here on campus. All residence halls are assigned a Peer Counselor that can provide basic level support and advice about these and many other issues. While Peer Counselors can be helpful, they are not trained counselors or experts. Additionally the Office of Residence Life and the Dean of Students Office have Resident Directors and Deans that have experience helping students with alcohol and drug related issues. If you need more advanced advice or support Student Counseling Services, located in the Robbins Annex – ext. 7433, has professionally trained and licensed staff to help.

In addition to these resources, B.R.A.V.E. (Bard's Response to Rape and Associated Violence Education program) counselors are available to provide confidential advice around issues of sexual assault and alcohol. Location: Sottery Hall, Room 104; Phone: 845-758-7557; 24-Hour Pager: 845-334-6400; Campus Security: x7777.
