Vice President and Dean of the College

Michèle Dominy
As chief academic officer, Dean Michèle Dominy works with the president to advance the central academic purpose of Bard College. Dean Dominy is responsible for faculty and student academic affairs and the undergraduate curriculum. She oversees faculty recruitment, appointment and promotion. As coordinator of the undergraduate academic program, the dean is attentive to college-wide matters and interdivisional interests. She assists faculty committees in their curricular goals, and with the establishment of academic policy. The dean upholds academic standards from admission to graduation. She also assists the divisional chairpersons and the president as they uphold standards of faculty responsibility as established by faculty action. In conjunction with the registrar, the dean maintains academic statistics, conducts studies of academic programs, compiles records of committee and faculty actions, and maintains a faculty handbook describing academic policies and regulations. Dean Dominy works with the associate deans and the dean of studies to develop the academic curriculum and student academic life. She is Professor of Anthropology.

Associate Dean of the College

Associate Dean of the College Mark Halsey facilitates the Science Initiative and the Bard Rockefeller Science Semester and is a member of the building team for the Gabrielle H. Reem and Herbert J. Kayden Center for Science and Computation. He works with the dean of the college in short-term and long-term management of academic space on campus, oversees the assignment of faculty office and research space, and serves on the Campus Facilities Council. He also serves on the Information Resources Council, addresses faculty technology requests and coordinates NITLE events. He works on institutional research and assessment, especially overseeing support from the Teagle Foundation and Center for Liberal Inquiry, special pedagogical and assessment initiatives including the Teagle Writing Assessment, and various workshops sponsored by the Center for Faculty and Curricular Development (CFCD). A member of the mathematics faculty, he serves as the dean's liaison to the Division of Science, Mathematics and Computing and the Division of Social Studies; applicants for external grants and awards are encouraged to coordinate their projects through him in conjunction with the Office of Program Development.

Associate Dean of the College/Dean of International Studies

Associate Dean of the College and Dean of International Studies Jonathan Becker oversees academic components of Bard’s study-away programs, including Bard’s Globalization and International Affairs Program in New York City, the Bard–Central European University Program, and Smolny College in St. Petersburg, Russia. Dean Becker works closely with students who wish to study abroad, or who are interested in expanding the scope of international activities on the Bard campus and he approves study-away programs. He also directs Bard's Global and International Studies academic program; oversees Bard’s Model United Nations Program and Debate Team; coordinates Bard's exchange program with the United States Military Academy at West Point; sponsors lecture series and other programs that focus on contemporary political, social, and economic issues; offers guidance on overseas fellowship and internship opportunities; and works closely with faculty and administrators at the Institute for International Liberal Education. Vice President for Enrollment/Registrar

Peter Gadsby focuses on the quality of the student academic experience, broadly conceived. He works with faculty committees and the offices of Admission, Dean of Students, and academic deans to address topics such as the quality of the first- and second-year experience, effectiveness of academic advising and moderation and senior project experience, and cohort survival analysis.  As associate vice president for enrollment, registrar Gadsby is responsible for institutional analysis and assessment.

Dean of Studies

As Dean of Studies, David Shein is the academic dean for student academic affairs.  He suppoprts students in their academic work and in designing their courses of study, supports faculty in academic advising and the exercise of academic policies, and works with the registrar, assistant registrar for advising, and the dean of students to monitor students' academic status and assist students in academic difficulty.

Dean Shein works with students on special requests for irregular courses of study and as a liaison between the Dean of Students Office and the Office of the Dean of the College to enhance links between the classroom and co-curricular life.  He also works on college-wide assessment and curricular intiatives and teaches in the First-Year Seminar and Philosophy Programs.

Assistant Registrar for Advising

Assistant Registrar for Advising Jennifer Triplett concentrates on supporting and organizing the faculty advising system for first-year students and sophomores.  She meets regularly with individual students who are in academic difficulty, as well as others who are doing well in their classes but are uncertain about their academic focus.  She works closely with Assistant Dean of the College David Shein, and members of the Dean of Students office.

Director of Opportunity Programs

As director of opportunity programs at Bard College,  Ariana Stokas oversees students admitted through the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program as well as through other opportunity programs available at the College such as the Bard Prision Initiative and Posse.  Through the various programs she supports students who are financially and educationally disadvantaged.  She is responsible for the recruitment of students, organizing the summer college preparatory program for first-year students, and working with faculty, the registrar, academic deans, and the dean of students office to ensure the academic success of program participants.  The director also works closely with the Office of Financial Aid and serves on the HEOP advisory committee.  Additional information can be found at: http://inside.bard.edu/heop/

Director of College Writing

As Director of College Writing, Co-Director of the Academic Resources Center and a faculty associate of the Institute for Writing and Thinking Philip Pardi teaches writing classes, works individually with students, and coordinates the program of peer writing tutors.  He also works closely with faculty on matters related to the teaching of writing and the integration of writing into courses across the curriculum.

Director of the New Orleans Initiative

Stephen Tremaine '07 directs the New Orleans Initiative, which works to provide students with opportunities for research and study on issues related to urban development. He directs the Urban Studies in New Orleans program, which combines coursework with internships in community revitalization organizations, and the Early College in New Orleans program, a series of Bard courses offered in collaboration with public high schools across New Orleans.  In this position, Tremaine is responsible for facilitating numerous Bard partnerships with high schools, community deveopment organizations, universities and civic associations across the city.

Academic Director of the Bard Center for Foreign Languages and Cultures

Academic Director of the Bard Center for Foreign Languages and Cultures Stephanie Kufner offers a wide range of tools for foreign language learning and teaching. Working closely with the foreign language faculty, she oversees and trains an international student-staff in facilitating new technologies and developing new approaches to teaching language. She establishes connections for subject-related internships in Germany, runs workshops, organizes foreign language related initiatives, and teaches cross-disciplinary tutorials integrating language, culture, and technology. Director of Career Development

Director of Career Development April Kinser helps students translate a liberal arts education into a professional career. She provides one-on-one career counseling, fosters career management skills, and supervises the management of a website (www.collegecentral.com/bard) that posts jobs and internships; connects students with alumni/ae, mentors, and employers; and hosts an online calendar of upcoming career events and deadlines. The career development office (CDO) provides students with pertinent information on graduate and professional schools, fellowships and scholarships, and writing résumés and conducting job and internship searches. Director of the Center for Faculty and Curricular Development (CFCD)

Associate Professor of Literature Deirdre d'Albertis facilitates faculty support and development. Under the auspices of the Center for Faculty and Curricular Development (CFCD), she works with faculty at different stages in their careers to integrate teaching with research and scholarship. Beginning with orientation seminars through various stages of the evaluation process, she is a resource for junior faculty in particular. Work/life, diversity, and gender equity policy initiatives fall under her purview, as well as mid-career and senior faculty career enhancement programs. Director of Quantitative Literacy

Director of Quantitative Literacy and Associate Director of the Academic Resources Center Jan Rizzuti ensures that students taking quantitative courses are mathematically prepared to succeed in those classes. She prepares and administers the qualifying exam required for taking quantitative course, coordinates and trains the peer tutors for all courses with a strong quantitative component, and provides supplemental instruction in mathematics. She also maintains an on-line tutorial site to provide students with preparatory materials and practice tests. She works with faculty across the divisions to enhance empirical literacy. Director of the Workshop in Language and Thinking

Poet and critic Joan Retallack is the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor of Humanities, a Senior Fellow of the Institute for Writing and Thinking, and the director of the Workshop in Language and Thinking, the three-week intensive reading and writing program for all incoming first year students. She teaches in Bard’s Division of Languages and Literature and the Integrated Arts Program.

Associate Director of the Workshop in Language and Thinking Thomas Bartscherer, visiting Assistant Professor of Humanities, comes to Bard from the University of Chicago Committee on Social Thought Ph.
