Uploading webpages to your personal web space

Before you upload your web files make sure you have configured your web space through Telnet.

Detailed instructions on transferring files for:

Macintosh (download Fetch)
Windows95/98 (download WS_FTP)


Macintosh Users

Follow the instructions below to transfer your file(s) via Fetch:

1. Open Fetch (download Fetch)

Double click the Fetch icon in the Applications Launcher

or find Fetch in the Applications folder of the computers hardrive and open from there.


2. When the New Connection window opens input the following:
Host: Type ftp.bard.edu
User ID: Type your Bard username
Password: Type your Bard password
Directory: Type www
Click OK.


 

 

 

3. A new window titled ftp.bard.edu will come up showing your website location. To move your files from your computer to this location, click Put File... This will bring up a window showing your desktop. Scroll and click through your harddrive until you find the file you would like to move.

Remember, your homepage's main page needs to be titled index.html or index.htm.

 

4. Once you have found the file, select it, and click Open.

 

5. The Put File window now appears with the file you have selected. Click OK and the file will be transferred.

After the file has transferred, your homepage directory should now look like this:

You should now be able to access this page from your web browser.

How do users access my web page?
When your files are uploaded, your web page is accessed at the following address:
http://inside.bard.edu/~username (username is your email login address) Note: don't forget the tilde (~) character. Your page won't load without the character.

Remember, anything you put on your web page is PUBLIC can, in theory, be accessed by anyone in the world with a web browser.

Windows Users

Follow the instructions below to transfer you file(s) via WS FTP (download WS_FTP):

Note: When you see this box you are being asked to perform the stated instructions. For example: "Double-click on the WS_FTP icon..." indicates that you try it!

1. Logging on:
  Double-click the WS_FTP icon on the desktop. You will see the "Session Properties" dialog box.
Type the "Profile Name," "Host Name," and "Host Type," exactly as shown here
Type your User ID in the box. Remember, it is your email User ID, not your full name
Type your Password and click OK

 

2. Selecting the files to transfer
You will see these two boxes after logging on. The box on the left is the "Local System." This box displays the files on your computer. The box on the right, "Remote System," is where you will be transferring your web files to the Bard system.

Try it!
In the left-hand box ("Local System"):
Click on the green arrow on the left-hand corner.
Click the "ChgDir" button to access your files.
Highlight the folder where your web pages are located.
Double-click the folder to access each of the files inside the folder
Click "Auto" located on the bottom of the "Remote System" box

Example
Let's say your web pages are in the C Drive located in your My Documents folder and are placed in another folder called "BC html." You would do the following:
- Click the green arrow.
- Click the "ChgDir" button until you find the My Documents folder.

To access the "BC html" file you would do the following:
- Highlight the My Documents folder .
- Double-click My Documents.

Next you would see on the "Local System" box, the file, "BC html," (our example) displayed, which is located in the My Documents folder.

Now you need to look at the right box, "Remote System." Notice the "www" folder. This is where your web pages will be placed.
Highlight the www folder and double-click.

Note that only the green arrow appears in the screen. That is fine!

Try it!
Highlight your folder ("BC html" is highlighted in our example)
Double-click to open up the contents to see the names of your web pages. (You might not have a folder and only a file if you have only one web page)

In our example, six webpage files are displayed after double-clicking the "BC html" folder. Notice the highlighted file, index.html. At Bard, your home page can be named "index.html" or "index.htm." The home page is the first page that will appear in the browser.

You are almost ready to transfer your files!!!

Note:
The divider running down the middle of the two boxes contains two arrow buttons

Highlight your file index.html (or index.htm)
Click the arrow -> pointing from the "Local System" to the "Remote System."

Note: The index.html file is now placed also on the "Remote System." You have successfully uploaded your index.html or home file!

Upload your other web pages or images the same way.

How do users access my web page?
When your files are uploaded, your web page is accessed at the following address:

  • For Faculty and Staff: http://inside.bard.edu/~username
  • For Students: http://student.bard.edu/~username

Note: Your username is your email login address. Don't forget the tilde (~) character. Your page won't load without the character.

Remember, anything you put on your web page is PUBLIC and can, in theory, be accessed by anyone in the world with a web browser.
