Using Telnet (PINE)
On campus
E-mail with Telnet
Problems with Telnet
Connecting to the bard.edu system using telnet from a Bard (on campus) computer.
1. You will need a Telnet application.
- Windows 95/98/NT has one built-in. Just select run from the start menu and type "telnet".
- Windows XP use Tera Term or Putty.
- Mac OS9 only use "better telnet".
- Mac OSX has one built in, under Applications/Utilities, called Terminal.
2. Start the Telnet program, and open a New Connection (in Windows
choose Remote System from the Connect menu, in Mac choose Open Connection
from the file menu). Enter "shell.bard.edu" (no spaces, with the periods, but without
the quotes) for the hostname you wish to connect to.
When the connection is established, you should see this login screen:
---------------------------
telnet (shell.bard.edu)
Bard College Academic Computing
bard login:
---------------------------
Log in to the system with your Bard username and password, and you can use
the Pine program and everything else you typically do on the system.
When finished, type "logout" to leave the Bard networked computer system.
Connecting to the bard.edu system using telnet from a Non-Bard (off campus)
computer.
Start the Telnet program, and open a connection (in windows choose
Remote System from the connect menu", in Mac choose Open Connection
from the file menu). Enter "shell.bard.edu" (no spaces, with the periods, but
without the quotes) for the hostname you wish to connect to.
When the connection is established, you should see this login screen:
--------------------------
Bard College Terminal Access Controller (relay) Authorized use only.
User Access Verification
Username:
---------------------------
3. Log in using your Bard e-mail username and password. When you sucessfully
log in to the system (there is typically a 5-10 second delay after correctly
entering your password), you'll see this screen
---------------------------
Type the name of the Bard computer to which you wish to connect.
Type exit to disconnect.
N.B. If you are coming through a 7 bit data connection (you'll know this
if you are able to login on the relay but mysteriously cannot login on your
destination system), type "terminal databits 7" (omit the quotes) and press
enter. Then type the name of your destination.
relay>
---------------------------
At the "relay>" prompt, enter "shell.bard.edu" (again, with the period, without the
quotes)
---------------------------
relay> shell.bard.edu
---------------------------
4. At this point, you will be connected to the main bard.edu user computer
and you will find yourself at the familiar bard.edu login prompt.
---------------------------
telnet (shell.bard.edu)
Bard College Academic Computing
bard login:
---------------------------
Log in to the system once again with your username and password, and you can
use the Pine program and everything else you typically do on the system.
When finished, type "logout" to leave the bard networked computer system.
Note: It may be that the other system or its Telnet program uses a "7 bit
data connection." You'll know this if you are able to login on the relay but
mysteriously cannot login on Bard. If this is the case, at the "relay>" prompt,
first type "terminal databits 7" (omit the quotes) and press enter. Then type
"bard" again (again without the quotes).
E-mail with Telnet
Basics
After you have logged into the Bard system with your username and password,
at the next prompt type "pine." This will bring you to the main menu
of your pine e-mail. Type "L" to access your e-mail folders and then
type "V" to view the folders selected. Your Bard e-mail is in the
INBOX.
Key Commands
Here are some key commands when using pine to handle your e-mail. C=compose;
V=view; R=reply; F=forward; S=save; D=delete; L=list folders; M=main menu; X=expunge;
Q=quit.
Deleting E-mail
To delete e-mail, select the e-mail and type "D." This flags the e-mail
for deletion but does not remove it from your Inbox. If there are too many messages
in your Inbox, you will reach your quota, and will be unable to use your e-mail.
To avoid this make sure you move your e-mail out of your Inbox or expunge your
delete messages. You may do this in one of two ways. 1. Before you close your
telnet connection type "X." You will be asked if you want to expunge
the selected e-mails, type "Y." 2. Upon quitting pine ("Q"),
you will be asked if you would like to expunge the deleted message, type "Y."
