E-Mail FAQs

Q: How do I access my Bard.edu e-mail from home?

A: Use your web browser to access Bard's Webmail.

Q: How do I set up a new e-mail account?

A: Come with a picture I.D. to the Helpdesk office located in the Henderson Technology Laboratories building.

Q: What do I do if I lost/forgot my password?

A: Come with a picture I.D. to the Helpdesk office located in the Henderson Technology Laboratories building.

Q: Why am I not receiving e-mail (or a specific e-mail)?

A: 1.You may be over quota. 2.The sender may not have your correct e-mail address. 3.The e-mail being sent is too large.

Q: Why can't I open an e-mail attatchment?

A: 1. You may be over quota. 2. The attachment is too big. 3.You are using Telnet (Pine) in which case try Webmail.

Q: Why can't I log into my e-mail?

A: You may be incorrectly inputting your username and password. If you think this is the case, come to the Helpdesk Office with your Bard I.D. and get a new password.

Q: I keep deleting e-mail but I am still over quota. What am I doing wrong?

A: Even though you have flagged e-mail to be deleted, it has not been emptied (or expunged) from your trash folder. Refer to Telnet, Netscape (IMAP), or Webmail for instructions on deleting e-mail.

Q: What does it mean to be "over quota" and how can I fix it?

A: Your Bard User Account reserves space for you on the Bard server. When you use up this space, you are "over quota." Students receive 8 Mb for their e-mail Inbox and a home directory with 20 Mb for e-mail folders and web pages. Faculty and staff receive 16 Mb for their e-mail Inbox and a home directory of 40 Mb for e-mail folders and web pages. You could be over quota in either your Inbox or your Home directory.

How can I tell how much of my quota I've used?
Using Telnet to Bard, log in as usual by typing your Bard username at the first prompt and your password at the second prompt. Then do nothing. A screen report will appear that tells you the size of your Mail and Home quotas and how much of each quota is currently being used. The report will also tell you whether you are over quota and how many "grace" days you have before your email function shuts down completely.

How can I fix quota problems?
Understand that it is not the number of messages that causes you to go over quota; rather, it is the size of the files. A single message with a large photo or audio file attachment can shut down your Inbox. Follow the rules below to avoid future quota problems:
• Don't use the Inbox to store messages. As soon as you have read a message, delete it or move it to a folder.
• Delete messages in your Sent folder often.
• Empty the Trash folder every day. (For instructions on emptying the Trash, refer Bard College Computing Resources Handbook, 1999 - 2000 or see Telnet e-mail help or Netscape e-mail help)
• Make Netscape Messenger (IMAP) your regular email program and use it to create message folders on your hard drive

Q: What is an appropriate size for a mass mailing?

A: Generally no larger than 75KB. See the Guide to E-mail Size Restrictions.

Q: Why do I get a message saying "Message exceeds maximum fixed size" when trying to send an e-mail?

A: This means your e-mail or attachment is too big to send. See the Guide to E-mail Size Restrictions.
