"Countries in Transition" Student Initiative

The project's goal is to engage Bard students from different countries and students at the Bard NYC Program in a discussion about their or other countries' political, economic, social and cultural transition. The main discussion forum will take place in April at Bard Hall in New York City (where the Bard NYC Program on Globalization and International Affairs is located).

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me (zf889@bard.edu) or call me (ext. 5013). We all hope that many of you will get involved in this very exciting project! I'm looking forward to seeing you at our meetings.

On behalf of the organizers,

Zoltan Feher

Our first meeting took place on Monday, March 4, 2002, from 3.30 to 4.30 in the Meeting Room of the Campus Center. Attending were Olga Kozak (Bard in NYC Program) and Bard students Bara Libovicka, Erzsebet Zelinka, Bo Bo Nge, George Toth, Diego Redard and myself. Olga and I first outlined our ideas about the project. We then had a discussion on the next preparatory meeting and the actual discussion forum in NYC. We distributed tasks and agreed on the details of putting together the project (dates, invitations, transportation, funding, etc.).

April 8, 2002

8:00-9:00 p.m.
Campus Center, Meeting Room

We talked about the structure of the April 19 forum and discussed questions about the individual presentations. We furthermore heard updates on all the technical, logistical and financial details of the April 19 trip to NYC, the forum and the dinner, the evening outing and the trip back to Bard. We decided that each student who wants to present at the forum is expected to write a one-page outline of their presentation by the next meeting.

We are going to finalize the structure of the April 19 forum and make the final list and order of the individual presentations. We are furthermore going to discuss all the remaining technical, logistical and financial details of the April 19 trip to NYC, the forum and the dinner, the evening outing and the trip back to Bard. All those who want to present at the forum are required to attend and bring their one-page outline.
April 19. 2002
Bard Hall NYC
The actual discussion forum is scheduled to take place on Friday, April 19 at Bard Hall in NYC. It will start with presentations on countries in transition by those Bard students who have a special affiliation with the given country/region and who took place in the preparation of the project. Countries that we think should be presented are those presently undergoing changes in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Asia and Africa. During the presentations, dinner will be served to participants. Then we will proceed with the discussion where any participant can pose questions to any of the presenters or participatants. The forum will then be followed by some night outing which is yet to be determined. Since participation is limited, only those may come to the forum who have sufficiently contributed to the organization, attended one of the meetings held at Bard, and will have prepared their presentation ahead of time.
