The internet has become an extension of the artworld and a tool for the ever expanding definition of art. Have a look at some of my favorites, some are pieces of art, while some are other things:

I did this title screen for my animation class... ...and my animation is the first "s" in "solus" |

This site is one of my all time favorites. What are they doing? This is the ultimate of deconstructionism, throwing off traditional notions of form, structure, balance etc. They take the whole vocabulary of art criticism and create art that synthesize all the supposedly negative qualities and say, “this is art.” A fuck-you to the art establishment. Yet like all great art movements, they are becoming appropriated by this establishment. Mark my words, in less than five years you’ll see tv commercials that look like this. Take a look at the animations ------------------------ |

An interactive web project by D.J. Spooky. Not a piece I particularly like, yet it is an indicator of things to come, with art defined increasingly by its approachability and even interactivity. But is a music program, art? By this logic, Garageband or Fruityloops is art. The control panel, by which you modify the images and sounds is surprisingly versatile, so play around with it. ------------------------ |

Another interactive music interface project online, but more intuitive and more satisfying. The ability to record and the further ability to share, with these two purposes central to the goal of the project, an egalitarian emphasis for art. Again, we see the computer and the internet pushing aesthetic and conceptual limits of art definitions. The last century of constant flux in norms of art has forced us to abandon the urge to pigeonhole it. Note the absence of an authorial presence on this site as a whole (typorganism.com). A break from the traditional method of exhibiting art in museums and galleries allow us to abandon certain conventions of that method, such as a heavyhanded authorial presence. This site is an example of everything right with art (According to my tastes, that is! What a preposterous claim!). ------------------------ |

It’s pretty funny, but is it art? Also for your consideration. ------------------------ |
A music video which begs the question…Does art age well? ------------------------ |
Random Personal Picture Finder Finds random pictures from across the internet. A survey of the world, according to those with digital cameras. Best site ever? Perhaps. ------------------------ |

But is a metronome art? Actually this is just further evidence to me that the internet is the new everything. Goodbye physical world! ------------------------ |

A Comprehensive list of NYC gallery openings. ------------------------ |

Danto’s suitably empowered spokesperson tells us this is art. I tend to agree. ------------------------ |

High design meets low budgets, a wonderful turn of events. ------------------------ |

In the future, robots will make our art! But seriously, this poses interesting questions about what can be considered art. It can be argued that since the advent of mechanical devices such as cameras, with vastly superior ability to mimic physical reality and without the lens of a human artist interjecting his or her subjectivity, the central purpose of art inherited from Plato, art as a mirror held up to reality, lost its meaning. Art must now be defined according to the subjectivity of the artist; the author is central. The interpretation of reality, becomes the focus, and modern art is born. |
