Nicaragua Education Initiative
The Nicaragua Education Initiative focuses on specific educational projects that empower youth and community members in the town of Chacraseca, a rural community in western Nicaragua. It began as a student led group nine years ago in response to Hurricane Mitch when students raised money to build houses and provide small scholarships for children to attend school. Since then, Bard students have returned to Chacraseca every winter break and have developed strong ties with the families living there. Our ongoing goal is to focus on educational projects that empower the community and promote self-sustainability. We have established a tutoring program, built a community library with which we continue ongoing work, provide scholarships for elementary through university level students to attend school, and hope to organize a teacher training seminar in the future. We believe in solidarity when working with communities and focusing on projects that will have lasting effects.
