Primary Care
Four nurse practitioners, a registered nurse, and a part-time physician staff the Student Health Service. Nurse practitioners specialize in primary health care services and have, through a master’s degree program and national accreditation, the knowledge base and clinical skills to provide a wide range of health care services. The Bard College medical staff understands and treats problems that relate to college-age students and their lifestyles.
Bard College medical staff can:
- Provide primary health care during the academic year for routine concerns
- Diagnose and treat short-term physical illness and minor injuries
- Prescribe common medications
- Give vaccinations or regular allergy injections
- Perform routine lab work
- Perform annual gynecological exams and PAP tests and address routine gynecological problems and concerns
- Provide birth control, emergency contraception and sexual protection to both male and female students
- Test for and treat sexually transmitted infections
- Refer for long-term or complex medical treatment with off-campus specialists, as warranted
- Provide educational programs a on a variety of health issues relevant to college students.
NOTE: Routine gynecological care is also available at the Red Hook Planned Parenthood clinic at 19 E. Market Street, Red Hook, NY 12571 (845-758-2032). Birth control pills cost less at the Planned Parenthood clinic than those prescribed from the Student Health Service. Please be aware that your family insurance, if any, is the primary payer for all off campus medical and mental health services. You must bring your insurance information with you at the time of your appointment.
HIV testing is available for men and women by appointment at the Red Hook Planned Parenthood clinic (845-758-2032). There is a small fee associated with this testing that may be covered by your insurance or the Bard Accident and Sickness Plan.
