Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How can I quit smoking at Bard?

A: The Health Service strongly encourages and supports students' efforts to quit smoking. For individuals, we offer smoking cessation counseling, self-help materials, medication prescriptions and advice about the different options available, close follow-up and e-mail support. For groups, one of our nurse practitioners has American Lung Association certification to run smoking cessation workshops. We will run an on-campus group session if there are six students who will commit to a twelve-week program. Some helpful websites for those contemplating quitting are www.cancer.org, www.lungusa.org/tobacco/, www.hsph.harvard.edu/cas.

Q: What do I do if I get sick at night or on the weekend?

A: If you have a health problem that can't wait until the morning when Health Service opens, call ext.7777. Bard Emergency Medical Service will come to assess your health status and help determine if you need further care at the Northern Dutchess Hospital Emergency Room (http://www.ndhosp.com/emergency/).

Q: How do I get off the meal plan?

A: It is Bard College's policy that all undergraduate resident students are registered on the meal plan. Chartwell's Food Service (ext.7533) offers a varied selection to accommodate special diets including vegetarian and vegan. If you have a dietary problem that is documented by your health care provider, call Chartwell's to schedule a meeting to discuss how they can help you meet your nutritional needs on the meal plan.

Q: How do I get refills for my ADHD, depression, or anxiety medications?

A: We encourage students to keep in close touch with the medical providers who originally prescribed their medications. Check your insurance policy and with our local pharmacies to see how you can fill home prescriptions locally (give link to local pharmacies). Frequently parents fill the prescriptions at home and mail them to students each month. Also, you can establish care with a local psychiatrist (insert link to local providers on counseling list) in order to maintain and monitor your medications. Health Service does not prescribe or refill these types of medications. A list of area psychologists and psychiatrists is available on this site. (see: Health Resources)

Q: Are my medical problems confidential eg. will my parents find out?

A: Your parents will find out any health issues we diagnose only if you choose to tell them. (see: Confidentiality Policy)

Q: How do I get Emergency Contraception? Do I need an appointment?

A: After a few brief questions, we make emergency contraception available to women during normal business hours. As always, we encourage you to call ahead, but if you just show up we can either help you then or at the next available appointment. (see: Making an Appointment)

Q: How do I get information about the Bard College Accident and Sickness Plan?

A: Insurance information can be answered by by calling Linda Christensen at ext. 7077. (see: Insurance)
