Blooming May

Por Mariel Fiori
May 2024

This month in La Voz magazine we bring you all kinds of Hispanic news and culture from the Hudson Valley that we hope will inspire you to many beautiful things. The magazine is flourishing with very good contributions. Here, I share you about them.

Our general coordinator and Editor Nohan Meza interviewed film producer Alexandra Vivas, who breaks barriers in an industry dominated by men and gives advice to aspiring film and television workers. In her column la esquina de las artes (The Arts' Corner) artist and independent curator Elisa Pritzker pays tribute to beloved Newburgh artist Gerardo Castro, who recently passed away and left us his great work.

Venezuelan sociology and music student in her final year at Bard College, Elizabeth Liotta, interviewed holistic nutritionist Andrea Lubrano, a recent resident of Red Hook, in the healthy living section. Another student in her final year of college, Miriam Schwartz, was interested in learning about the asylum seekers who came to the Hudson Valley, and who are mobilizing to help them navigate the legal system, and even learn English. This is an unmissable article on our center pages.

Ecuadorian student, Waleska Brito, tells us her impressions of being a student-athlete, something not very common in Latin America, but which is a very popular modality in the United States. Brito also interviewed playwright Toby Campion and actor Manuel Viveros, who plays the famous Afro-Cuban musician Arsenio Rodríguez, in a play in Spanish, with music, written by Campion. Arsenio! will be available for free in Kingston thanks to the Spanish-speaking team of Radio Kingston and community partners such as La Voz magazine. The truth is that I am very happy that we will once again have a theater in Spanish in our area. I hope to see you, and if you come remember to sign up to reserve your seat at bit.ly/ArsenioKingston.

In the month that we celebrate mothers in the United States and several Latin American countries, we bring you two related notes. One is Recuerdos de Bogotá (Memories from Bogotá) by Venezuelan student Elisvanell Celis, who went there with her mother. A journey of many discoveries. In the column, Ser padres (on Parenting) teacher Olga Salazar talks about a common situation: when maternal love is foreign. Obviously, we celebrate all maternal figures, biological or not.

Holistic psychologist Dora Inés Grosso García brings us a summary of the topic of addictions, which she has been covering for the last few months in her column El poder del amor (The Power od Love). Plus, in the Guía de recursos (Resource Guide) we pass on all kinds of opportunities, from jobs and education to the dates and concept of the Repair Café.

What else would you like to find in the pages of La Voz? We are always on the lookout for your ideas, comments, and suggestions for future issues of the free and independent monthly magazine La Voz. Simply write to us at [email protected] and make your voice heard!

Meanwhile, we continue preparations to celebrate 20 years of La Voz magazine, on Saturday, June 22 from 6 to 10 pm in the beautiful Spiegeltent of Bard College. We will have live music with Alex Torres and his Latin Orchestra, dance classes and demonstration with Maia Martínez and David Salvatierra from Dojo Dance Company, honorees of the Spanish-speaking community who with their contributions support the Spanish-speaking and immigrant communities of the Valle del Hudson, silent auction, food, and fun. Tickets are now available, following this link: bit.ly/LaVoz20Aniv.

The celebration is also our annual fundraiser. La Voz is free to read, however, not free to produce. That is why I am very grateful for the support of Bard College, our home, for so many years, to the Novo Foundation, and to all the sponsors, local and regional businesses, who trust La Voz every month to reach the entire Hudson Valley and the region of the Catskills.

Welcome to the May 2024 issue of La Voz magazine and Happy Day to all the Moms who read us!
