Frequently Asked Telephone Questions


How do I purchase a telephone for my dorm room?
First-Year Students - Your phone has been placed in your room and the number has been verified. It has been paid for through your tuition process. This phone should stay with you throughout your stay at Bard.
Returning Students - If you need to purchase a phone, contact the Bard Bookstore at x7005.

How do I verify my dorm room telephone number?
Between the hours of 7 am and 5 pm, pick up your telephone and dial 7465 for the Buildings and Grounds department or 7460 for Campus Security after hours. Your correct number will appear on their caller ID and they will relay it to you.

How do I receive long distance service in my dorm room?
Your room is set up for local service and 800 service. Contact the Bookstore at x7005 to purchase pre-paid calling cards.

Is there an automated "Hot Line" number I can call for voice mail assistance?
Yes. Dial extension 6100.

Is there a telephone number I can call during the day (7am–5pm) to receive telephone operation assistance?
Yes, Dial extension 7661.

How do I set up my Voice mail?
Pick up your receiver from your own phone in your own room. Dial 7600; follow the tutorial, which will guide you through the process of assigning a pass code and setting up your Voice Mail. If you have trouble, dial ext 7661.

My telephone does not work, what do I do?

  1. Be sure that the telephone is securely plugged into the wall jack.
  2. All dorm rooms are equipped with one Ethernet and one telephone jack for each student. (The Manor building has only one telephone jack per room.) These jacks are identical in shape. Be sure the telephone is plugged into the telephone jack rather than the Ethernet jack.
  3. Your telephone unit may be inoperable. Try a friend's telephone in your room jack. Try your phone unit in a friend's tele jack.
  4. When all else has failed, call ext 7465 to place a work order. Be sure to leave name, dorm, room number, and telephone number.
