Our recycling program is carried out through the use of colored bins that serve as collection points and are located throughout campus.

If recycling loads are contaminated, the whole load may go to the landfill.

     THE GREEN BIN - CONTAINERS

all empty metal & glass food & beverage containers

plastic with resin #s:

NO caps

lids are ok.

flattened CARDBOARD  - NEXT TO ANY BIN!

bag peanuts and styroforam for the trash

THE RED BIN - PAPER

newspaper, magazines, all uncoated, unwaxed paper

The custodial staff transfers items to curbside, and BERD workers move them to the Recycle Yard for transport off site by our solid waste hauler. Items go to an Ulster County public facility for consolidation before additional market-dependent movement.

The exception to this process is for items placed in THE BLUE BINS.  These are items that are intended to be re-used by other Bard community members, and are taken to the fREE-use store in the Kappa House Garage.

You can send the following to BERD through campus mail for recycling or donation.

  • Computer Disks (instead of recycling unwanted or used computer disks, they can be reformatted and relabeled for future use)
  • Used Transparency Film
  • Tyvek (Express Mail/Fed Ex) Envelopes
  • Used Video tapes
  • Cell Phones

Bard competed against over 200 other colleges in a recycling competition.
