Computers

Bard staff, faculty and students are encouraged to reduce their energy use - enable the Energy Star™ settings on their monitors. Additional savings can be achieved by enabling the settings on their hard drives. Go to your computer's power management settings and make the change!

Change the default settings on your Word documents

Right now Microsoft margin settings default to a wasteful 1.25 inch on the left and right margins.  Henderson has developed this tip sheet to help you change those settings permanently - you'll get 20% more text on each page- paper and printing costs will decrease commesurately.    You can still override the new settings, as necessary, on future documents.

Tips for Energy Efficient Computing

  • Do not leave computers running overnight and on weekends. Also, wait until you are ready to use the PC before you turn it on.
  • If the computer is going to be inactive for more than 15 minutes, consider turning it off. After this time, the energy needed to run the computer outweighs the start-up energy.
  • A modest amount of turning equipment on and off will not harm the computer. The life of a monitor is related to the amount of time it is in use, not the number of start and stop cycles.
  • Try to plan your computer-related activities so you can do them all at once, keeping the computer off at other times.
  • Do not turn on the printer until you are ready to print. Printers consume energy even while they are idling.  Energy Star printers use 60% less energy.
  • If you spend a large amount of time at your computer, consider reducing the light level in your office. This may improve CRT (cathode ray tube) screen visibility as well as save energy.
  • Most computer equipment now comes with power management features (EPA Energy Star). If your computer has these features, make sure they are implemented.
