Guidelines and Policies

Bard is aware that construction costs of a new building are often only 20-30% of the building's costs over its 30-40 year life. To help reduce these lifetime costs, we are evaluating using the United States Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) process for campus construction.   New buildings built to the LEED standards will be designed and constructed to use less energy, less water and fewer materials.  The buildings will provide improved indoor air quality through better ventilation and control of pollutant sources.

Geothermal heat pumps are in place in over 20 campus buildings, including the Richard B. Fischer Performing Arts Center.

Matching money has been awarded the college to install a solar thermal heating system at the Stevenson Gymnasium – the project is expected to reduce fuel oil use by 25%.

  • Visit the Bard Horticulture Department for information on campus landscaping.
  • Progress is being made for recycling our Construction & Demolition (C&D) waste through our carter, Royal Carting.
