The First Snow
By C.O.

Long ago, in a small Indian village in the woods, there lived 4 children, named Bright Eyes, Cute As A Mouse, Swims Like A Fish, and Owl Feathers. They were best friends.

It was October. It was time to collect food to eat in the winter. The kids and the adults were all helping to get food.

Swims Like A Fish was hunting with the men. He held his bow and arrows and looked for bears, rabbits, deer, and birds. Swims Like A Fish found a rabbit. He aimed carefully, and shot an arrow. There was enough rabbit meat for only one person, or maybe two. The people needed a lot more. They needed enough to last them almost all winter, for some animals were not hibernating, but most were. While the other men kept hunting, Swims Like A Fish returned to the village with the rabbit.

Cute As A Mouse, Bright Eyes, and Owl Feathers harvested corn with the women. Bright Eyes found a large ear of corn and she tossed it carelessly into a woven basket, already half full of com. Cute As A Mouse found several ears of com. "How many ears of corn have you found?" she asked Owl Feathers. "None," Owl Feathers replied. "Can you help me find some?" "Sure," said Cute As A Mouse. "You will never find any corn if you don't look very carefully. You have to look under leaves. The raccoons take the ones that are not hidden." Owl Feathers followed her directions. She looked under every leaf. Soon all the baskets were full, and there was corn for everyone for 3 days.
