The Legend of the Lucky Rock
by M.H.
One day a Lenape Indian named Big Bear was lost in a huge forest. Then someone or something threw a rock in the direction the rock came from and there was Lenapehoking! Now Big Bear thought that his rock was lucky, so he carried it everywhere he would go. A few sunrises later, there was a throwing contest. Big Bear wanted to win very much. So he made an arrowhead. The Indian competing against him was a huge man named Cogen. But Big Bear was not fearful because the arrowhead was banged on the lucky rock. Cogen threw first. He threw 20 feet. Next, Bear Bear threw 21 feet. People asked him how did he beat Cogen? "My lucky rock," he said. So everybody from then on, made arrowheads out of baning a rock on a rock, and called them hammerstones.
