Lenape Indians
by Jody C.

This story takes place on a winter morning. I was working out in the field using a deer horn. We were dancing for rain. I was wearing a Buffalo head with the deer horn. The next day, I was in the tribes Talking Ceremony, talking about not having enough food. everybody would have to go hunt for food, or we would have to move to another place. The men had to go hunt for buffalo. The older kids, like me, will go fishing in the Hudson River. None of us came back with much. We are lucky that we have walnuts left over from last year. The next day, I had to practice the Dance for the corn to grow more.

I was scared we would not be able to stay in our home. The tribe said that we are going to move to the plains. The next day we traveled to a cave to stay the night. One man went to the back of the cave and he yelled, "Gold! I found gold!" We went to the town to trade the gold for lots of food. The man said the gold was rare so, we got more food then we thought. We went back to the village for a celebration. Now it is summer time for all the animals and people. There are lots of animals for food. I had to go fishing with my friend. We had to get the fish for the crops. We buried the fish under the corn to grow better. Now our tribe will never get low on food again.
