THE
ART HISTORY MAJOR
Students work closely with their advisers to develop individual
study plans that include a wide range of Lower College courses and
a minimum of two Upper College seminars. Standard divisional procedures
are followed for Moderation. Moderation boards consist of three
Bard faculty members, including the student’s advisor and
at least one other art historian. The choice of board members and
the scheduling of boards are the responsibility of each student
in conformance with the college calendar. Prospective majors need
to have four art history courses before moderating, among them at
least one 100-level course. Guidelines for moderation are available
from the secretary and faculty of Art History. Students should take
a variety of art history courses before focusing on the area of
their Senior Project research. They are required to take at least
one art history course each semester and to distribute those courses
over the range of art history offerings so as to maximize exposure
to different faculty and different approaches to the field.

practice across cultures and time. Students are encouraged to sample
fully from the range of courses we offer and take complete advantage
of our talented, diverse faculty. Moderated students are required
to take at least one art history course per semester. A single course
may satisfy a period requirement, the non-western requirement, and
a seminar requirement.
Students
are also strongly encouraged to take additional courses in studio
arts, film, media, and electronic arts, integrated arts, literature,
history, religion, philosophy, and other areas (with particular
emphasis on courses that develop writing skills). Students seriously
interest in Art History are advised to acquire a reading knowledge
of a second language.
