Yuka Suzuki, Assistant Professor of Anthropology

Yuka Suzuki began teaching at Bard in August 2003. She received her Bachelors in anthropology and Africana Studies from Cornell University, and is currently finishing her PhD in anthropology at Yale University. Professor Suzuki's research and teaching interests revolve around political ecology, human-animal relations, post-colonial theory, race, violence, development, and cultural poetics. She has conducted fieldwork in Zimbabwe and Uganda, focusing on the confluence between wildlife and national identity, state imagery, and conservation policies. Her most recent publication is entitled "Drifting rhinos and fluid properties: the turn to wildlife production in Zimbabwe" in the Journal of Agrarian Change. Professor Suzuki's research has been supported by the Social Science Research Council, Wenner-Gren Foundation, Mellon Foundation, Yale University Council on International and Area Studies, and University of Zimbabwe Centre for Applied Social Sciences. She is additionally affiliated with the Environmental Studies, Africana Studies, and Studies in Race and Ethnicity programs.
