Christopher Lindner, Archaeologist in Residence
BA, Hamilton College; MA, University of Cincinnati; PhD, University at Albany. Dr. Lindner specializes in historical geo-archaeological landscape investigations and experimental use-wear analysis of prehistoric stone tools, often with students as assistants in data acquisition. In addition to scientific articles in journals such as Archaeology of Eastern North America, Northeast Anthropology, and Hudson Valley Regional Review, he has edited two collections of scholarly papers, A Northeastern Millennium and A Golden Chronograph for Robert E. Funk. As anthropology professor, he teaches "Field Methods in Archaeology" on a prehistoric site in the fall and in the spring "Historical Archaeology", which has its focus on background research and artifact identification relevant to the history of African Americans. His students also pursue projects in American Studies, Historical Studies, Environmental Studies, and Africana Studies. He devotes summers to the "Bard Archaeology Field School" for college, community, and high school students. He maintains on-going projects at the Lighthouse Cove and Grouse Bluff prehistoric Native American sites; at the Gardener's Lodge historical site of Blithewood in Annandale; and at the Guinea Community site, 200 years ago an African American settlement in nearby Hyde Park. In fall and spring he conducts intergenerational seminars for students and community members to discuss cultural resource issues of mutual concern. As scientific consultant, he participates professionally in environmental impact studies and planning for cultural resource protection. Dr. Lindner is President of the New York Archaeological Council, the state's professional organization, and Vice President of Hudson River Heritage, the historic preservation group for advocacy and education in the Mid-Hudson Valley.
