We will be reading selections from the Iliad, including many of the most famous passages in Homer e.g. the farewell scene between Hector and Andromache, adn Achilles and Priam discussing the return of Hector's body. One of the goals of the seminar is an understanding of epic style and an appreciation for the ways in which Homer conveys character and nuance within the constraints of a traditional and partially formulaic medium.
