1 credit Although
many cultures have believed in and practiced communication with the dead,
Spiritualism as it developed in the nineteenth century had particular doctrines
and political ramifications that will be explored in this class. In
addition to covering the history of the movement as it developed in the United
States, Europe and Brazil, we will also examine spirit photography, artwork
done in trance by mediums, and the continuing influence of Spiritualism in
cultural production. Women played a central role in Spiritualism as both
mediums and organizers, often aligning themselves with Women’s Suffrage and Abolitionism thus begging the question, what role did
it play in the development of feminism? This class will meet for five weeks
on the following dates: January
31, February 7, 14, 21, and 28. Class size: 18

1 credit Perhaps the most well-known “secret society” in the world, Freemasonry is a
fraternal organization that stresses moral development and public service
(among other things) utilizing architectural symbolism and theatrical rituals.
Although membership is confined to those who believe in a supreme Deity, many
of its rites involve occult ideas. This class will provide a general history of
the organization as it spread globally as well as provide explanations for its
various offshoots (Scottish and York Rite, Eastern Star, etc.). We shall
examine the architecture and décor of Masonic Lodges, as well as explore its
symbolism via its visual artifacts. This class will be supplemented by a
visit to and tour of the Grand Lodge of New York in Manhattan. This class
will meet for five weeks on the following dates: March 7, 14, 21, 28 and April 4th. Class
size: 18
