IntroDUCTION  TO American Culture & Value

Donna Grover

OLIN 310

HUM

This course develops the assumptions that Americans define their differences more through their culture than their politics or else they politicize their cultural differences. Those differences are sometimes muted and at others inflamed by the role of culture in the market place. The Scopes Trial over the teaching of evolution is a telling example. The battles over drugs, abortion rights, and environmental justice are others. During the semester we will focus on the development of modern media, popular culture, advertising, architecture, gender roles, and official efforts to suppress cultural differences. The readings will include novelists like Twain, Fitzgerald, Salinger, and others who have had a keen sense of the sources of cultural conflicts.  Class size: 18
