Cross-listed: Anthropology, Global & Int’l Studies This course serves as an introduction to the role of Africa and the diaspora in the making of the modern world. Drawing from approaches in anthropology, art history, history, literature, and music, we will explore symbolic meanings surrounding the continent that have circulated since the 18th century. Movement—both in ideas and resources—will be emphasized, along with the connections forged that firmly situated Africa at the center of global history. We will focus, for example, on the trans-Atlantic slave trade that enabled the rise of industrialized economies, as well as early Africans—often erased in the invention of national origin myths—who shaped the cultural landscapes of American society. In more recent contexts, we will investigate the role of the diaspora in African liberation struggles, as well as nostalgia for the continent articulated in African-American identity politics. This class includes occasional guest lectures from core faculty in the Africana Studies program to present a range of disciplinary perspectives. Specific topics to be addressed in these guest lectures include: African art and music; slavery and the Atlantic world, colonialism in literature, Christianity and missionization, Independence and postcoloniality, and the emergence of Africana Studies as an intellectual field. This course is required for students concentrating in Africana Studies. Class size: 18
