Part two of the year-long Accelerated Italian course, open only to those students who completed the first segment of the course in fall 201- and the intersession program in Florence. The course will continue to cover the major topics of grammar through intensive practice in the four skills (speaking, comprehension, reading and writing). In this semester, the textbook is supplemented by regular multimedia work in the Bard Foreign Language Resource Center and a required weekly tutorial with the foreign language tutor to practice oral skills. ITAL 335 Italy Today: Culture, Literature and Media in the New Millennium

The course explores contemporary Italian culture through an interdisciplinary approach, looking at the major media such as newspapers, magazines, Internet, TV, Rai International, as well as the literature that is defining the beginning of the new millennium. Students will read works that won the most important literary prices in the last ten years, Campiello and Strega. They will develop a critical approach towards virtual representation of official culture sponsored by Berlusconi’s government vs. underground culture. They will research contemporary artists in several disciplines (such as fine arts, theater, music, fashion, cinema and food) as well as their reception, by reading reviews, articles, interviews and watching related video segments. The class will discuss the role of art and literature in the new Italian society while improving Italian language through specific work on grammar, syntax, and style. All course work in Italian.
