AART

Cross-listed: Integrated Arts, Social Studies   This course examines how the modern body in dance, film, and visual art has engaged with social and political causes in the twentieth century. What is the relation between artistic experimentation and political progressivism? How can one define the avant-garde? What are effective strategies for interpreting where the politics of movement become manifest? How have these strategies become co-opted? We ask these questions of bodily performance in the broader context of the history of politics and aesthetics with a focus on Germany and the United States from the 1930s until the present.

AART

Cross-listed: Human Rights, Integrated Arts, SST   (2 credits) The concept of public art came into prominence during the 1980s in the context of publicly sited and funded sculpture. This seminar asks how we can speak of public art as 'theatrical' and, especially, as choreographic. What is the difference between public and private space in performance, and how is this difference negotiated in choreography? We look at Anna Halprin's AIDS workshops (the film "Positive Motion"), the controversy over victim art surrounding Bill T. Jones's "Still/Here", the public/private dichotomy in William Forsythe's multi-media "Kammer/Kammer" (Ballet Frankfurt), and issues of the public sphere (Habermas), social space (Lefebvre, Crimp), protest, and the civil liberties of the artist.  This course will meet for the first seven weeks of the semester.

(The following Dance classes will not be available for on-line registration.)

Intensive technique studies are essential to a serious dance student’s training. Intending and current dance majors must register for four credits of dance technique each semester of their four years at Bard. Students are welcome to watch classes currently being offered to learn about the different modern dance styles/methods of teaching and the ballet training offered.
