The semester will consist of carefully reading
selections from some of the great scenes in the Iliad. Regular quizzes on Homeric vocabulary arranged according to
frequency of usage will be used to consolidate fluency. We will pay close attention to meter and to the
interaction of meter, sound, formulaic structure, and poetic meaning. Basic secondary texts in the theory of
Homeric poetry as traditional oral compositions (Parry, Lord, Nagy) will be
read as a grounding in how to read the Iliad
diachronically rather than as referring to a single century or area. Advanced students will be assigned more of
the Iliad and will have occasional
