The semester will consist of carefully reading selections from some of the great scenes in the Iliad. Regular quizzes on Homeric vocabulary arranged according to frequency of usage will be used to consolidate fluency.  We will pay close attention to meter and to the interaction of meter, sound, formulaic structure, and poetic meaning.  Basic secondary texts in the theory of Homeric poetry as traditional oral compositions (Parry, Lord, Nagy) will be read as a grounding in how to read the Iliad diachronically rather than as referring to a single century or area.   Advanced students will be assigned more of the Iliad and will have occasional separate meetings. On-line registration
