Students will continue to gain mastery reading
Greek prose and poetry. We will begin
by reading Herodotus and paying careful attention to the beginnings of the
periodic style; the second half of the semester will focus on the Odyssey and
the prosody of Homeric poetry. Students
will consolidate their knowledge of issues of vocabulary and syntax throughout
the semester, with regular review of grammatical forms and close attention to
the formal aspects of translation. On-line

Homer throughout the course. They will
also undertake Greek prose composition, and in addition to controlling
vocabulary and syntax, they will begin to study in depth the differences and
the similarities between Attic Greek, the Ionic Greek of Herodotus, and the
