This course is a continuation of Latin 101. The first seven or eight weeks of the semester will be devoted to completing Wheelock's Latin Grammar. This will involve a sequence of increasingly ambitious short readings of unaltered Roman prose and poetry. By the time we have completed Wheelock, the student will be prepared to read lengthier selections of Roman authors, and the remainder of the course will consist of careful reading of a short speech by Cicero and passages of poetry by Catullus or Ovid.

This course builds upon Latin 201 to broaden the student's understanding of the literature and culture of the Roman Republic and Early Empire. We shall read selections from some of the major Latin prose and poetry writers of these periods. Prose readings include substantial passages from Ennius, Cicero, Livy, and Petronius. Poetry readings will include selections from Plautus, Lucretius, Vergil (Eclogues and Georgics), Catullus, and Horace. The course is open to students who have completed the third semester of college Latin, or who can demonstrate an equivalent level of proficiency.
