Schedule

To be arranged
A study of dactylic hexameter verse mainly through the Iliad, but also through selections for the Odyssey, the Homeric Hymns, and Hesiod's Theogony and Works and Days. Students will be asked to learn to scan hexameters and become acquainted with the features of word order, which distinguish epic verse from other kinds of verse as well as from prose. Weekly vocabulary quizzes will be given, based on the frequency of the appearances of words in Homer. We will also study the theory of oral composition by illiterate bards and take the measure of its consequences to the interpretation of Homeric and Hesiodic poetry.
