2 credits Previous lectures have investigated Jesus' background in Galilee and in the movement of John the Baptist, as well as the political forces and religious impulses which brought him to Jerusalem and confrontation with Pilate. This year's series will concentrate on the crucifixion itself, and on the conviction among Jesus' followers after his death that they saw him alive in their own visionary experiences.

The experience of human suffering, and reflection upon what that experience means, is a central topic within the theological teachings of major religious traditions, and a deep concern in literary investigations of what C. S. Lewis called "the problem of pain." The seminar will be devoted to assessing some of those resources, and to exploring how their wisdom may be related to one another and applied.
