An introduction to the composition, structure, and properties of matter. Central concepts in the second semester are energy transfer, spontaneity, and change (thermochemistry, chemical equilibrium, and kinetics). The laboratory stresses basic techniques and quantitative applications of topics discussed in class. Concurrent enrollment in calculus is recommended for students who intend to go on in chemistry.

2 credits This course provides an independent laboratory experience for interested students concurrently enrolled in Chemistry 102. Projects from past years have included synthesis and analysis of coordination compounds, enzyme kinetics, analysis of environmental samples, and designing and testing new experiments for Chemistry 101-102.

This course continues a modern, molecular approach to the subject. In the second semester, statistical mechanics is developed as the link between quantum chemistry (discussed in Chemistry 411) and equilibrium thermodynamics and chemical kinetics, this semester's main topics. Carefully chosen experiments illustrate these topics.
