1 credit Christianity is the largest religion
presently practiced in the world, and yet is widely misunderstood. One reason
for a lack of critical understanding is that Christianity has evolved along the
lines of several different systems of religion over time. In this short course,
each of these major, generative systems is identified and analyzed. Class size: 20

1 credit What does it mean to
erect a physical reminder of a deceased loved one? Mausoleums, gravestones and tombs are, unlike
human life eternal—built to last forever.
The variances in funereal art are as diverse as people and cultures that
create monuments to loss, grief and memory.
In this course we will study this phenomena as
it appears in Montropose Cemetery in Kingston. Montropose,
designed by landscape architect, Calvert Vaux (who designed New York’s Central
Park), contains examples of 19th century sculpture as well as more
modern gravestones. We will also look at
the phenomena of roadside memorials, which while temporal, still serve as a
reminder of a life lost.
