Cross-listed: Experimental Humanities  This course introduces the multidisciplinary field of American Studies. We will trace lines of connection, sometimes surprising, across historical moments and media -- from Cabeza de Vaca’s catastrophic sixteenth-century expedition to contemporary theories of border politics, from nineteenth-century debates about police weaponization to Hollywood films, and from the abolitionist lecture circuit to the popular music industry, for example. While focusing on the geographical area that is now the United States, we will also attend to the hemispheric and transoceanic routes of migration and exchange that have shaped U.S. history and culture. Our reading will include primary sources from the colonial period alongside more contemporary materials; our discussion will attempt to parse the pluralities and contestations that have gone into the term "American." Coursework will include essays as well as opportunities for digital mapping and audio projects.  Class size: 22
