A course for students with little or no previous
knowledge of Russian that introduces the fundamentals of the spoken and written
language as well as Russian culture. We will emphasize conversation, reading, and
written proficiency and encourage creative expression in autobiographical and
fictional compositions. Audio-visual materials will be an integral part of the
learning process. In addition to regular class meetings, students are required
to attend a one-hour-per-week tutorial. Beginning Russian will be followed by
an intensive 8-credit course in the spring semester and a 4-credit summer
language and culture program in St. Petersburg, Russia. Class size: 20

This
course is designed to continue refining and engaging students’ practice of
speaking, reading and writing Russian. Advanced grammar topics are addressed
through a wide variety of texts and contexts, with emphasis on literary
analysis and the modern press. Students expand their vocabulary and range of
stylistic nuance by writing response papers and presenting oral reports.
Study includes a semester-long project that provides an opportunity to build
our own Web design dictionary; to research aspects of modern Russian culture;
and to present findings in a collaborative creative effort, such as a play,
“news broadcast”, or a concert. Class size: 18

Advanced
Russian through select 19th and 20th c. prose and poetic texts is designed for
students with at least two years of study of the Russian language and for
heritage speakers who wish to enhance their knowledge of Russian literature and
practice reading, writing and speaking the language. The course aims to build
the students’ vocabulary and improve their ability to communicate in Russian.
Emphasizing the genre of short story, the course is geared to the study of
works by such writers as Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev,
Feodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, Fedor Sologub, Ivan Bunin, and Alexander Blok. Conducted in Russian. Class size: 15
