The world of media is going through a major transformation
around the world, affecting politics, culture, and international relations.
This course will begin with classic concept of media by analyzing
theorists such as Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, and Marshall McLuhan. It will
continue with readings from contemporary thinkers such as Yochai Benkler, Clay
Shirky, and Mohammed el-Nawawy, on modern media, and explore new platforms such
as online media and cell phones as they affect both the West and the developing
world. It will include both texts and online examples, and students will
be encouraged to experiment with the creation of online content, focusing on
the arts, human rights, and other issues of interest to both the U.S. and
Palestine.
