PRE 110 /

FISHER PAC

AART

This course is designed as an anatomy class for dancers, prospective dance teachers, and anyone interested in the application of anatomy to dance technique. Scientific information is limited to a need to know basis, focusing on the musculoskeletal system, with immediate transfer of lecture material to dance-movement concepts. This course will present a scientific basis for the human body that will aid in the technical and aesthetic growth of dance performance. In addition to the weekly lecture, the class will make frequent visits to the dance studio, in which students will be guided in applying scientific concepts to movement.

Dance Technique Courses:

Intensive technique studies are essential to a serious dance student’s training. Intending and current dance majors must register for two credits of dance technique each semester of their four years at Bard. All technique classes carry 1 credit each.

Introductory Dance Courses:

(One credit each)  Classes in modern dance and ballet intended for the beginner;  no previous dance experience necessary. Open to all students. New students with previous dance experience should speak with the dance professors before registration.

Classes will be based on the style and movement sensibility developed by Bill T. Jones and Janet Wong.  The foundations of dance—correct alignment, technical acuity, and muscular training—will be covered from the standpoint of the company’s physical aesthetic.  This course will also develop the dancer as a thinking, feeling mover who makes choices with genuine consequences.

This class teaches basic concepts of Contact Improvisation – a thirty-two year old form–including spiral, the C curve, counterbalance, and rolling point of contact. We work frequently with eyes closed in order to integrate these skills into your dancing. Time will be dedicated for open jamming and watching others dance; we will develop articulate watching as a strategy for stronger dancing. We will aim to explore more advanced skills such as performing, extreme momentum use, and jumping and catching. There will be readings and video viewings; grading is based primarily on attendance, critical and creative writings, demonstration of CI fundamentals, attendance of one live performance and its evaluation, and a final creative project. No previous dance experience required.

Intermediate and Advanced Dance Technique:

One credit each. Intensive technique studies are essential to a serious dance student’s training. Intending and current dance majors must register for two  credits of dance technique each semester.   Also open to non-majors with experience, inclination, and permission of the instructor.

2 credits  This course is developed to impart the values and movement aesthetic of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and to train the dancer serious about developing their technical skills.  Class meets four times a week and includes a rotating roster of teachers. This course aims to deeply integrate technical ability and artistry within the dance-artist, expanding the dancer’s abilities to include fluid use of highly technical, improvisational, and analytical skills.  Students must be self-motivated and interested in being challenged. Coursework outside the class is required and will include participation in online forums and occasional journals. This course also requires attendance at one New York City-based performance (paid for by the student) and participation in Bard Dance Day.  Prerequisite: Intermediate Modern Dance or the equivalent.  No exceptions.

3 credits   This course will use the focused study of Bill T. Jones' Chapel/Chapter as the springboard for creating  an inquiry- based, multi-disciplinary work of performance during class time. Running parallel to this process will be the creation of a work by students outside of class, using the elements being generated in- class.  Our work will be inquiry-based, centering around a specific  topic of investigation (more details on that at a future date).  We will identify and develop our capacities for an aesthetic inquiry necessary to both observe and create art and delve into the importance of seeing clearly in order to make with freedom and range.  The semester's work will culminate in an evening-length performance of collaboratively-generated, inter-related works. Prerequisites: Intermediate level dance and at least one 200-level comp class.  Transfer students with equivalent experience or current students who feel they are an exception are asked to contact the professor directly to explore enrolling without the above requirements.
